"Ships in the Rain"

I am obsessed with the “Blue Hour.” 

The blue hour happens twice a day when the sun is just below the horizon. The sky puts on a deep blue and casts blue hues across an open landscape. The name can be misleading because it lasts 15min to an hour, depending on the location and season. The blue hour is hit or miss in the coastal northwest because overcast skies cast variants of grays instead of blues. Then there are those rare moments when the sky is clear, the air is a crisp cool, the horizon line is not hidden by traffic or trees, for a moment, all the other colors fade away, and the world around us is decorated with every blue imaginable.  

Over the years, I have collected these moments in photographs. I have recently pulled these photos back out and started to paint a few of them. All three of my paintings that are currently at the Cannon Beach Gallery exhibit “Working Shores” are inspired by “Blue Hour” moments on the Oregon Coast.
